Canon City - Chama
Our main destination was the Great Sand Dunes National Monument but the route through Westcliffe and along by the Five Peaks was a great start to the day. Our first stop was the Fort Garland Museum where Kit Carson was Commander.
North America's tallest dunes rise over 700 feet but there is no sea nearby. They have been created by winds that let go of the sand they are carrying before rising over the Crestone peaks. There are no trails but you can go anywhere you want. This place is fun!!
We crossed into New Mexico on the Cumbres Pass road which follows the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad. Beautiful scenery, especially as there was still snow lying. We spent the night in Chama.
We visited the Colorado Territorial Prison Museum which is located directly next door to the present State prison. The museum is quite eerie - the stories of the prisons inmates and their destinies are interesting, if not scary.
