Springerville - Chinle

Our first stop of the day was at the Rainbow Forest Museum in Petrified Forest National Park. Here we learnt how wood became petrified. From the various overlooks, there are wonderful views of the Painted Desert.

We then stopped at the the Hubbell Trading Post National Historic Site, near Ganado. This is the oldest operating trading post in the Navajo Nation.

Canyon de Chelly National Monument is administered by the National Park Service but the land belongs to the Navajo. This is an incredible place where you can feel the history of the Anasazi and Navajo tribes. We decided to drive along the South Rim that evening and went all the way to Spider Rock Overlook. Spider Rock is an 800 foot high sandstone spire.

As the sun set, we travelled back along the rim, stopping at all the overlooks. The White House, built by the Puebloans around 1,000 years ago can be seen from the White House Overlook.
