Wells - Craters of the Moon - Idaho Falls
We set off towards Jackpot in the north which is on the stateline to Idaho. We had read about Jackpot and knew it was a gambling town for the Idahons but were very disappointed to find out that it was just a collection of casinos and nothing else.
Next stop on the route was the Shoshone Falls, just north of Twin Falls. The Shoshone Falls are higher than the Niagara Falls but usually there is very little water. We were very lucky to see the falls in their full glory. The Malad Gorge is easy to reach, just off the 86 west of Twin Falls. The deep gorge is a paradise for birds.
Then we drove northwards to the Craters of the Moon National Monument which is a lava and crater landscape. The climb up to the top of the Inferno Cone is well worth it for the unbelievable views of the volcanic scenery. On the way to Idaho Falls we passed Arco and Atomic City where the worlds first atomic power station was built. That evening we drove to Blackfoot to visit the Eastern Idaho State Fair and Rodeo. We ate Idaho Baked Potatoes (delicious), viewed the local arts and crafts and watched the fair rides. We were thrilled by the daredevil cowboys, rodeo queens and the clown!!
