Unfortunately we couldn't see the sea from our motel room as the fog was so thick. We decided to leave the car at the motel and got the bus into Union Square. We thought about getting a cable car but the queue at Powell was already a mile long at 10 a.m. so we walked up the hill towards Chinatown. Before walking along Grant Street we visited the Old St. Marys Church. Then we hiked up Telegraph Hill to the Coit Tower.
The fog was gradually thinning so we could actually see the city. From Telegraph Hill we walked over to the "crookedest street" Lombard Street. From there our walk went down hill to the Cannery and Fisherman's Wharf. Of course, the place was moving with tourists but the sun was out and San Francisco was looking its best. We walked back to the Cable Car Barn which is a museum explaining how the cable cars work - very interesting.
At the back of the Fairmont Hotel we caught a cable car down to Powell - a short distance but free of charge! The bus back to the hotel was very busy but interesting. In the evening we drove over the Golden Gate Bridge to see the sunset. All we could see was fog and more fog!
