Las Vegas - Death Valley
Would you believe, we didn't leave early. We had an excellent breakfast before setting off north on Highway 95. On Highway 373 we passed through Amargosa which has an opera house. Entering into the Death Valley National Monument, we drove up to Dantes View. We had left Las Vegas late in order to miss the hot midday sun but as we got out of the car, the late afternoon heat flattened us. Below and far into the distance stretches Death Valley - an incredible expanse of salt and heat!
Directly under Dantes View is Badwater which is the lowest point in the northern hemisphere - 282 feet below sea level. When we arrived at Furnace Creek the temperature was 45 C / 112 F in the shade - but it's a dry heat!!!
My places of interest: Devil's Golf Course, Artist's Drive, Zabriskie Point.
